LIGO at the threshold of science operations

چکیده

LIGO held its first science run during the two and one-half week period from 23 August to 09 September 2002. The strain sensitivity of the interferometers during this observational period was h(f) ∼ 10−20 Hz− 1 2 at f ∼ 300Hz. The useful instrumental bandwidth spanned the decade 100Hz ∼< f ∼< 1000Hz. During the 17-day period, the three km-scale LIGO interferometers (4km and 2km in WA and 4km in LA) and the 600m GEO interferometer (outside Hanover, Germany) operated as a network of detectors for part of the time. The LIGO Scientific Collaboration are presently analyzing the first data run (S1) for a number of classes of sources of gravitational radiation. Working groups within the collaboration are performing searches for signatures coming from four classes of gravitational wave (GW) sources. These include: (i) continuous wave sources, (GW counterparts to EM pulsars); (ii) burst or transient sources, such as GW emissions from SNe; (iii) inspiral and coalescence of compact binary systems; (iv) a stochastic gravitational wave background. The emphasis in this first science run will be develop the analysis techniques and software pipelines that will be used to analyze data continuously during periods of extended observation in future science runs. At the same time, the S1 data quality are such that it should be possible to provide improved direct observational limits on gravitational radiation with these fundamentally new instruments.

Observation time to first detection of double neutron star mergers by gravitational wave observatories

We constrain the uncertainty in waiting times for detecting the first double-neutronstar (DNS) mergers by gravitational wave observatories. By accounting for the Poisson fluctuations in the rate density of DNS mergers and galaxy space density inhomogeneity in the local Universe, we define a detection ‘zone’ as a region in a parameter space constrained by the double neutron star merger rate and ...

Gravitational Wave Detectors: a Report from Ligo-land

At the time of this conference, in June 2002, The LIGO Science Collaboration was getting ready to perform its first Science Run, where data will be taken with all three LIGO detectors. We describe here the status of the LIGO detectors as of February 2003, their performance during the “Engineering Run” E7 (Dec 28’01-Jan 14’02) and subsequent Science Runs in 2002/3. We also describe ongoing effor...

A radiometer for stochastic gravitational waves

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration recently reported a new upper limit on an isotropic stochastic background of gravitational waves obtained based on the data from the 3rd LIGO science Run (S3). Now I present a new method for obtaining directional upper limits that the LIGO Scientific Collaboration intends to use for future LIGO science runs and that essentially implements a gravitational wave r...

Technical discussions of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) sensitivity often focus on its effective sensitivity to gravitational waves in a given band; nevertheless, the goal of the LIGO Project is to “do science.” Exploiting this new observational perspective to explore the Universe is a long-term goal, toward which LIGO’s initial instrumentation is but a first ste...
